An Ekiti Peace Corps man |
Government of Dr.
Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti has come under heavy criticism over the activities of a
security outfit in the State popularly called Peace Corps.
The State owned security
outfit, according to those who spoke with TheNews Daily correspondent in
Ado-Ekiti, said the people of the State have been subjected to humiliation
owing to the illicit acts of the operatives of Peace Corps.
According to them, Governor Fayemi recdently
said his own Peace Corps can arrest people but they must turn in the arrested
person to men of State Police Command within two hours. Those who spoke with TheNews Daily noted that the uniform of men of the so-called Peace Corps is the same as that of the Nigeria police while positing that this has generated controversy in the State.
One of our respondents, Mr. Aresa Atenibiaje noted that “Security Matters are under the Exclusive List of the 1999 Constitution, meaning that "No State House of Assembly has power to legislate on it."
“Section 214 of that Constitution provides that the Nigerian Police Force
shall be under the full and exclusive control of the federal government”
“Section 215 further establishes that the police force is owned and controlled exclusively by the federal government and that the authority and powers of the force extends to the whole country. This is also contained under Item 45 of the exclusive Legislative List in Part 1 of the second schedule of the 1999n Constitution”
“Section 4 (5) provides that: "If any Law enacted by the House of Assembly of a State is inconsistent with any law validly made by the National Assembly, the law made by the National Assembly shall prevail, and that other Law shall, to the extent of the inconsistency, be void."
Mr. Atenibiaje, a media practitioner however described the establishment of the Peace Corps whose members according to him are APC thugs meant to terrorize members of opposition party consequent upon their recent activities in Ado-Ekiti, the State capital city.
